Concrete Driveways
Concrete is a solid, cost-effective choice. A standard concrete driveway costs less per square foot than pavers and can be installed relatively quickly. When sealed and maintained, it holds up well for 25 to 30 years.
The issue on Long Island is freeze-thaw cycles. Water gets into concrete, freezes, expands, and over time causes cracking. Road salt accelerates this. Once a concrete driveway starts cracking significantly, repair options are limited. Patching is visible and rarely blends in well. Full replacement is usually the only real fix.

Paver Driveways
Pavers cost more upfront than concrete, but they handle Long Island winters significantly better. The reason is the individual unit design. Pavers can shift slightly with freeze-thaw movement and then be reset. A cracked or sunken paver can be lifted, the base corrected, and the paver reset without disturbing the rest of the driveway.
Pavers also open up more design options. Different colors, patterns, borders, and materials give you control over the finished look that concrete cannot match. Tumbled pavers, large format slabs, and custom patterns are all possible depending on what you are going for.

What About Asphalt?
Asphalt is another common driveway material on Long Island, particularly for longer driveways. It costs less than concrete or pavers and handles freeze-thaw reasonably well when properly installed. Whatever material you choose, the base installation determines how long it holds up. On Long Island, a proper gravel base with the right depth and compaction is what keeps pavers from settling and prevents concrete from cracking prematurely. A contractor who skimps on the base is setting the project up to fail in a few years.
