Nor'easters are a fact of life on Long Island. The South Shore towns take the brunt of it. Wind gusts over 50 miles per hour, heavy snow loads, and the combination of wet and cold all put serious stress on roofs. Here is what to do after a storm hits.
Stay Off the Roof
This has to come first. Wet shingles are slippery. Hidden structural damage can make walking on a roof dangerous even when it looks fine from the ground. Do not go up there. You can get a lot of useful information from the yard and from your attic.
Check From the Ground and the Attic
Walk around the perimeter of your house and look for the following:
- Missing shingles or large sections that have shifted
- Visible granule loss collecting in gutters and downspouts
- Damaged or bent gutters and fascia
- Fallen branches or debris on the roof surface
- Any obvious gaps, punctures, or exposed decking
Then go into your attic with a flashlight and check for daylight, new water stains, or wet insulation. These are reliable indicators of a breach in the roof system.
Call for Emergency Tarping If Water Is Getting In
If water is actively getting inside, the priority is to stop more damage from happening while you get the repair scheduled. Titan Project Solutions provides emergency tarping throughout Nassau County. Call or text (516) 557-4933. We respond quickly after major storm events.
Document Everything Before Any Work Starts
Before any repairs are made, take photos. A lot of them. Walk around the house and capture:
- All visible damage on the roof surface
- Close-up shots of damaged or missing shingles
- Interior damage including ceiling stains and wet insulation
- Gutters, fascia, and any other exterior damage
Time and date stamps on photos are useful. Do not throw away any damaged materials before your adjuster has seen them.
How to Handle the Insurance Claim
Call your insurance company and report the damage as soon as possible. Most policies require prompt reporting of storm damage. An adjuster will come out to inspect.

A few things worth knowing: you are allowed to have your contractor present during the adjuster's inspection, and we recommend it. Adjusters work for the insurance company, and their initial estimate is not always final. If you disagree with the assessment, you have the right to dispute it.

Be Careful Who You Hire After a Storm
After a major storm, contractors from out of state show up on Long Island looking for quick work. Some are legitimate. Many are not. They knock on doors, offer deals, collect deposits, and disappear.
Before hiring anyone after a storm, verify they are licensed in New York State, ask for proof of insurance (both liability and workers' compensation), never pay the full amount before the job is done, and avoid anyone who cannot produce a written contract.
Local contractors with an established reputation in Nassau County have to live here after the storm. Their business depends on the work holding up.
The Bottom Line
Document first, call your insurance company, then get a local contractor in to inspect. If there is active water intrusion, call for emergency tarping right away.
