When homeowners on Long Island start thinking about roof replacement, two materials come up more than any other: asphalt shingles and metal roofing. Both work well here. The right choice depends on your budget, how long you plan to stay in the house, and what matters most to you.
Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material in the country, and for good reason. They are cost-effective, widely available, and come in a range of colors and styles that work with virtually any home.
For Long Island homes, architectural (dimensional) shingles are the standard choice. They are thicker and more durable than older 3-tab shingles and hold up reasonably well against wind and rain.
What you give up with asphalt is longevity. A well-installed architectural shingle roof will last 25 to 30 years under normal conditions. On the South Shore, where salt air and nor'easters are a regular occurrence, lifespan can be shorter if the roof was not installed correctly or ventilated properly.
- Lower upfront cost
- Widely available and easy to repair
- Large selection of colors and profiles
- Familiar material for most contractors
- Shorter lifespan compared to metal
- Less wind resistant in extreme conditions
Metal Roofing
Metal roofing covers a wide range of products. The most common on residential Long Island homes are standing seam panels and metal shingles. Both are significantly more durable than asphalt and built to handle exactly the kind of weather Long Island gets.
Standing seam metal has concealed fasteners, which means less opportunity for water to penetrate at the attachment points. It handles wind-driven rain particularly well. Metal shingles can mimic the look of traditional shingles or slate with the durability of steel or aluminum.
Metal costs significantly more upfront. Depending on the material and complexity, you are looking at roughly two to three times the cost of architectural asphalt. But a metal roof installed correctly can last 40 to 50 years or more with minimal maintenance.
- Long lifespan, often 40 to 50 years
- High wind resistance
- Excellent performance in coastal and salt air environments
- Low maintenance once installed
- Higher upfront cost
- Requires experienced installation
How Each Holds Up to Long Island Weather
Salt air is a real factor for homes in coastal Nassau County towns like Seaford, Bellmore, and Babylon. Both materials can handle it when installed correctly, but the quality of installation and the underlayment matter as much as the material itself.
Nor'easters bring high sustained winds and heavy precipitation. Properly installed architectural shingles meet the needs of most Nassau County homes. Metal roofing outperforms asphalt in extreme wind events, which is a real consideration for waterfront and South Shore properties.

Ice damming is another Long Island issue, especially for older homes with poor attic ventilation. Neither material eliminates ice dams on its own. Proper ventilation and ice and water shield installation matter more than which material is on top.
Which One Makes More Sense for Your Home
If you are planning to sell within 10 years, asphalt is likely the smarter financial choice. You get a new roof, a solid warranty, and good protection without the premium price.
If you plan to stay long-term or you want to minimize future maintenance and replacement costs, metal is worth the higher upfront investment. You are also likely to see better performance in the harder storms that come through every few years.
If your home is in a coastal area or you have had repeated storm damage, metal is worth a serious look.
