How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in Nassau County

There are a lot of roofers on Long Island. Some are great. Some are not. If you are shopping for a contractor for the first time, or you have been burned before, here is what actually matters when you are making this decision.

A contractor based in Nassau or Suffolk County has to answer to the community they work in. They care about their reputation in a way that a company flying a crew in from out of state simply does not. Local contractors also know the permit requirements, building codes, and common construction challenges specific to Long Island.

National franchise roofing companies sometimes do good work, but they often use local subcontractors you have never met or vetted. You are better off hiring a company where you can meet the owner directly.

In New York State, roofing contractors are required to be licensed. Ask for the contractor's license number and verify it. This takes a few minutes and is not optional.

Ask for a certificate of insurance showing both general liability coverage and workers' compensation. Workers' comp is critical. If a worker gets hurt on your property and the contractor does not carry it, you could be liable.

Do not accept verbal assurances. Get the actual certificates.

Google reviews are a decent starting point. Look for recent reviews and pay attention to the ones that describe specific projects rather than just a generic nice job. Look for patterns. Multiple reviews mentioning the same issue, positive or negative, are usually reliable.

Ask the contractor for references from jobs completed in the last year. Actually call them.

Get at least two estimates, ideally three. This is not about finding the cheapest option. It is about understanding what is included and being able to compare on a level basis.

A detailed written estimate should break out the scope of work, the specific materials being used (brand and product line, not just asphalt shingles), whether there is a full tear-off, what the warranty covers, and when they plan to start.

• Large deposit demanded before any work starts
• No written contract offered
• Vague estimates with no material specs
• Pressure to sign the same day
• No verifiable physical address in the area

Ask who will actually be doing the work. Some contractors use subcontractors for every job. That is not automatically a problem, but you should know.

Ask about the workmanship warranty and what it covers. Materials are covered by the manufacturer. Workmanship covers the installation itself. A reputable contractor stands behind both.

Ask how long they have been doing roofing work in Nassau County specifically, and whether they have completed projects in your town.

A new roof is a significant investment. The contractor you hire matters as much as the material you choose. Take the time to verify licensing, check insurance, read real reviews, and compare detailed written estimates.
